Research shows that emotional intelligence is the strongest predictor of occupational success, even more so a factor than IQ. Emotional intelligence competencies have been found to be the differentiator between high performers and average performers, and from managers and true leaders. In today’s organizations, it is critical to develop and retain talent and for leaders to move their teams through constant change with fewer resources towards innovation and productivity to stay ahead and competitive in the marketplace. Emotional intelligence competencies are best developed through coaching and experiential training. These skills can be tapped into by hiring managers through the use of structured interview questions.

Business Division and Teacher Education Division Faculty of Midway College (Midway, KY) recently completed a study that found generational differences in work attitudes existing among the generational cohorts currently in the Central Kentucky workplace. Baby Boomers (born between 1942 and 1960), Generation X (born between 1961 and 1981) and Generation Y (born after 1982) make-up the cohorts that were studied.. 834 Central Kentucky employees from seventeen (17) different organizations participated in the study

These findings are particularly important in light of the changes taking place in the workforce including the flattening of the hierarchy and involvement of employees in decision making and heightened the interaction of employees from different generations. As such, the study concludes that generational differences are likely an element of diversity that leaders of organizations need to be aware of and manage.

While the research findings found some significant differences in generational work attitudes between the generations, it also found some in common. All three generations considered loyalty from their employer and maintenance of good working relationships as important. Specifically the survey found that all generations take their performance appraisals seriously; they are all comfortable working with members of the opposite sex and people with different backgrounds, and comprehensive healthcare was important.

The research results also point out that the generational values of workers in Central Kentucky are similar to like generational cohorts described in previous research from different parts of the US and the globe. There were no particular differences between these cohorts and others elsewhere.
About our Speaker: Teresa Ann Isaac

Former Lexington, Kentucky, Mayor Teresa Isaac likes to keep things moving. As mayor she presided over measures that previously had been stalled by controversy:

Enactment of an indoor smoking ban

Increased pay for police, firefighters and corrections personnel

Budget cuts to every other area of government, including significant cuts to her own office budget

In her first months on the job, Mayor Isaac led the city through a major ice storm where more than 90,000 residents were without power. She received kudos for her compassion, hard work and leadership.

As a young lawyer, Teresa Isaac wrote the grant proposal to the U.S. Department of Education and directed the resulting project that did much to bring equity to sports in Kentucky. For those efforts she received a National Sports Equity Commendation, and the Golden Gazelle Award, in 1988. In 1988 she also was selected for the first class of Leadership America.

A University of Kentucky Law graduate, Isaac served three years as a prosecutor in the Fayette County Attorney’s office and five years as Associate Professor in the Eastern Kentucky University Department of Government and Law before running for office. She is an honors graduate of Bryan Station High School in Lexington and a Magna Cum Laude Graduate of Transylvania University.

Isaac served from 1999 through 2002 as Executive Director of the Lexington Fair Housing Council while also teaching. She resumed teaching in 2007 after her stint as mayor.

Isaac has received numerous national, state and local honors. In 1996 she was one of six American elected officials chosen to monitor the first Palestinian elections. The U.S. Department of State sent her to three cities in Argentina in 2004 and in Chile in 2005 as part of a democracy project to train mayors in those countries. In February of 2007, Isaac participated in the U.S. - Islamic World Forum, sponsored by the Brookings Institute, in Doha. Later that year, the State Department sent her to Namibia.

In April, 2007, Isaac was presented the Halaby Award for Public Service, at the Kahlil Gibran “Spirit of Humanity” Awards gala in Washington, D.C.
