Discussing Socio-Economic Differences in the World and Workplace is like the weather. We all talk about the issues but find it difficult to even define what we mean by poverty, middle class and upper class, let alone understand the rules inherent in each class. The world of politics, media, community relationships, crime, war and peace and international relations are very hot topics. The workplace is all ablaze with discussions about cultural, religious, national and traditional differences and we wonder how to best deal with the tensions they cause while maintaining a high level of efficiency.

Consultant conferences are buzzing with how to deal more effectively with workers, clients, customers and owners who come from different classes and cultures. Some are faced with major cultural shifts as their workplaces are shifting from Builders and Boomers to Busters, all of whom approach work differently.

So, how can we deal with these sea changes? First, we in the ODN are going to tackle some of the more important points involved in cultural variety. Second, we will not take on all the issues at one event. We will start the discussion with one of the major categories of cultural anxiety; social and cultural classes. Then, we will ask you to help us define the next category to take on over the next year or so.

Here is the first step for OD’s 2007 Fall Program: Some of us recently read a book by Dr. Ruby Payne called, A Framework for Understanding Poverty. We found it extremely insightful for helping us better understand the “Hidden Rules” that guide each of the major cultural groups in America. We will be led by a team from City Cure, a group dedicated to alleviating the short term and long term issues of poverty. City Cure has become Cincinnati’s resident experts on this topic.

If you work with anyone from a different culture from your own you will find this approach very insightful. I have been an educator for over forty years and in almost every imaginable culture. However, Dr. Payne’s approach taught me how to understand the “RULES” by which cultures operate.

We are meeting at DeVry University in a wonderful classroom. We have discovered Funky’s, a caterer who does a superb job of fixing great food. The meal alone will be worth the visit and the networking and presentation will make you sit up and shout!

Shalom,

Ps Invite at least two others to join you and impress them with the company you keep.
